Quanto mais cresce a força produtiva do trabalho, tanto mais se pode reduzir a jornada de trabalho, e, quanto mais se reduz a jornada de trabalho, tanto mais pode crescer a intensidade do trabalho. Considerada socialmente, a produtividade do trabalho cresce também com sua economia. Esta implica não apenas que se economizem os meios de produção, mas também que se evite todo trabalho inútil. Ao mesmo tempo que o modo de produção capitalista impõe a economia em cada empresa individual, seu sistema anárquico de concorrência gera o desperdício mais desenfreado dos meios de produção e das forças de trabalho sociais, além de inúmeras funções atualmente indispensáveis, mas em si mesmas supérfluas.

Dadas a intensidade e a força produtiva do trabalho, a parte da jornada social de trabalho necessária para a produção material será tanto mais curta e, portanto, tanto mais longa a parcela de tempo disponível para a livre atividade intelectual e social dos indivíduos[,] quanto mais equitativamente o trabalho for distribuído entre todos os membros capazes da sociedade e quanto menos uma camada social puder esquivar-se da necessidade natural do trabalho, lançando-a sobre os ombros de outra camada. O limite absoluto para a redução da jornada de trabalho é, nesse sentido, a generalização do trabalho.
